Homeschool with the Best Online Maths Curriculums for All Budgets

From free maths curriculums for homeschoolers to the more pricey options, we’ve got you covered.

Maths is one the most important subjects we teach as homeschoolers. In New Zealand the maths scores of mainstream school students have been trending down for several years and it is one of our main reasons for opting out of the school system.

I take maths seriously.

This list is based on our experience. Most of these curriculums we have used at one point or another and we trialled the ones that we hadn’t already used. I have included only what I can genuinely recommend.

CTC Math

Cost: $197 p/year for one student OR $297 p/year for entire family.

This curriculum is for grades k-12 and is aligned with American standards. Each lesson includes a clear explanatory video and then practice questions. What I like most about this curriculum is that I can easily make custom question lists based on lessons my child has covered.

Another thing I really like about this curriculum is that a family membership covers any number of students. As a mother of four (nearly five) this is a huge bonus.

Khan Academy

Cost: Free. Donations invited.

Khan Academy is a non-profit organization that aims to make quality education accessible to everyone. They offer lots of subjects but their maths is particularly good. Khan Academy maths can be used as a complete curriculum or as a supplement for topics your child is struggling with. I find Khan Academy easy to navigate and we have used it off and on for several years to supplement maths.

IXL

Cost: $79 p/year with additional children at $40 each.

IXL covers all school years and is aligned with American Standards. The layout of the curriculum is very simple. Each concept is introduced with a written lesson and then followed by practice questions. Children work to master each concept. They receive a digital medal once they achieve mastery of a concept.

IXL now includes games which is an improvement since we last used the programme.

ST Math

Cost: free for homeschooling families

Spatial-Temporal Math is an award winning programme that makes maths visual. I really appreciate that this programme is not overly busy with sounds and distracting graphics. It is simple and engaging. The visuals make sense rather than just entertain. This is a curriculum for pre-k to grade 8. It can be used as a standalone curriculum or to supplement another curriculum.

It’s free for homeschoolers so why not give it a go?!

Dream Box

Cost: $99.95 p/year or a family plan at $149.95

This is an engaging programme for younger learners. It feels more like a game than a curriculum but it is aimed at grades k-2 so this seems appropriate. Your child chooses a character and explores Adventure Land playing maths games along the way.

Math Seeds

Cost: $99.99 p/year

This programme is from the creators of Reading Eggs and it is aimed at young children aged 3-9. In my experience this is a really fun way to reinforce maths concepts for very young children, ideally pre-k and k. My children lost interest in this programme around age 6 or 7 and were ready for something more challenging.

*This programme may have updated since we last used it so it might be more challenging for older children now.

E Singapore Math

Cost: $99 p/year

This is a full curriculum that covers kindergarten to 5th grade and is aligned with American standards. Perfect if you wanted to use Singapore maths but need an online curriculum.

For us, the only drawback for this curriculum is that there is no family discount.

Beast Academy

Price: $96 p/year with additional children at $60 each

This curriculum is for students aged 6-13. There are also options for live online classes, virtual summer camps, and books to accompany the programme at additional prices. It looks and feels like a game and so may be particularly useful for reluctant maths students. There is a free demo option where you can explore the programme a little bit to see if it is something you and your child would like.

I highly recommend you check out a few curriculums from this list yourself. With so many free trials and demos it is easy to do. However if you’re strapped for time I feel confident that any one from this list is a winner.

I have included one more maths curriculum below for you to check out.

Though not technically an online curriculum, it is a complete curriculum available online to print for free.

Check it out and let me know what you think in the comments below.

MEP – Mathematics Enhancement Programme

Cost: Free

This is a high quality full curriculum. It’s hardly believable that it is free. Well worth checking out.

A note on spelling math/maths:

I am from New Zealand so I use Maths as that is the preferred term in British English. However, some of these curriculums use the American/Canadian term Math, so you will spot both spellings throughout my post.

A note on pricing: pricing listed in this post were relevant at the time of posting this. I am not associated with any of the above programmes or receiving any form of payment for my recommendations at the time of posting this. I do not guarantee the above prices in anyway.
